COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE OF DENGUE FEVER IN ALLAMA IQBAL TOWN, LAHORE
Community Knowledge of Dengue Fever
Abstract
Globally, dengue is an emerging serious public health problem with a million infections occurring annually including significant number of dengue hemorrhagic fever cases.
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the community knowledge regarding dengue fever in Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore.
METHODS:
A cross sectional study was conducted in peripheral areas of Allama Iqbal Town, Lahore, Pakistan.
Sample size was calculated by using standard WHO formula, 384 households were selected through
convenience sampling technique to interview the research subject of both gender of >15 years of age.
Data were analyzed in SPSS version 20. Quantitative variables were presented as frequency and percentage.
RESULTS: Male participants in the study were 74% and females 26%. Literacy percentage was 71%. People knowledge regarding dengue fever was 76%. About sign and symptoms knowledge was 64%, regarding transmission of dengue by female mosquito bite time was detected 90%, about consequence of disease, and prevention of outbreaks of dengue fever80% were aware.
CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that significant participants had the knowledge of dengue fever. Knowledge regarding sign and symptoms, mode of transmission and prevention was found adequately good, with
preventive measures mainly focused on protection from mosquito bites by using mosquito replants.
