Abstract

Background: The study of well-being has grown to be a significant and widespread area in Psychology. As a field of positive psychology, well-being was investigated by various disciplines, including economics, sociology, philosophy, and psychology.

Objective: Purpose of the current study was to translate and validate Short Form of Social Well-being Scale (SWBS) in Urdu language and to establish its psychometric properties.

Methodology: The forward and backward method of translation was used for the translation of scale. Cross-language validation was established on a sample of 90 university students. To confirm the factor structure of the scale, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was run. The participants of study comprised 374 university students with the age range of 18 to 22 years (M = 19.26, SD = 1.31).

Results: The results of CFA confirmed the original five factor structure of the scale by providing a good model fit to the data with values of x2/df = 1.76, CFI = .96, RMSEA= .05, GFI= .95, TLI= .94, RMR = .07. Cronbach’s alpha was a = .90. Convergent validity of the scale was determined on a sample of 230 university students by finding its correlation with Satisfaction with Life Scale (r = .46, p < .01).

Conclusion: The results demonstrated promising reliability and validity of Social Well-being Scale on Pakistani sample.

Keywords: Social Well-Being, Cross Language Validation, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Convergent Validity.
