Knowledge and attitude of medical and para medical staff towards blood donation in Children Hospital Lahore

Abstract

Blood is the all-time most charitable tissue of the body and a major component used in therapeutic and non-therapeutic procedures in different medical situation.Objective:To assess level of knowledge about blood donation, find out positive and negative attitude, identify the obstacles that prevent the people to become blood donors in CH & ICH.Methods:It was a Cross-sectional study. This research was conducted conducted at The Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore. The six months study was from March 2017 to September 2017. A total of 246 people were included in this study. Data was collected by questionnaire from medical and paramedical personnel using Convenient Sampling technique. It was a hospital based-study in which people from both genders were added. The collected data were checked for its validity, consistency and accuracy before analysis. Data is presented in tables, figures analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software computer program version 20.Results:Out of 246 respondents 104 (42.2%) persons belonged to medical staff of the children hospital and 142 (57.7%) belonged to paramedical staff. The overall knowledge on blood donation was good, knowledge level was found highest among the paramedical staff. 93 (37.8%) of the respondents think blood donation is harmful and 52 (21.1%) think that donation makes a Person weak. 235 (95.5%) people responded that they will donate blood to someone in need. 143 (58.1%) people have the fear of needle to be inserted regarding blood donation and 182 (73.9%) people think that it’s the lack of knowledge and unawareness that prevent people to become blood donors.Conclusion:Study showed that most of the medical and paramedical personnel were well aware of importance of voluntary blood donation and had almost complete knowledge about the protocol of blood donation. They encouraged voluntary blood donation and were ready to donate blood in any kind of emergency situation.
